Maria J. Andrade is a Newark resident with an ardent drive for Social Equity and Equality. She is an inspirational leader and a distinguished and Parent Liaison for College Bound (New Jersey State GEAR UP Project) at NJIT. Throughout the last several years, she has worked closely with curriculum specialists to further develop the successful mentoring component in New Jersey State GEAR UP Project simultaneously working alongside Newark Public Schools' counselors, instructors, and its students. Developing strong relationships with non-profit and corporate organizations that help bridge the gap of education and opportunity. She has been appointed a Regional Ambassador for the NJ GEAR UP & College Bound Alumni Network since 2010.
Maria is an exceptional young leader who has made a difference in all projects that she commits from leading a program to help minority students pursue a college education to Latina’s efforts for gender equality. In addition to her role she has also worked along the last 6 yrs in education settings ranging from PD Special Needs Autism Instructor - self contained classroom setting. To Correctional Educator specializing with youth at risk in a Juvenile Detention Center.
Ms. Andrade is a candidate for her BA in Criminal Justice and a Political Science -Certificate awarded in Washington DC by The Washington Center she is also part of NJCU-OSP Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society & National Society of Leadership and Success- NJCU Chapter. As a woman of color, daughter of Ecuadorian immigrant, young mother and social justice fighter she has dedicated her time to continuously develop her interest areas which include but are not limited to: Social Justice, Equality and Equity concerns in Minorities, Criminal Justice Reform, Education, Advocacy for the marginalized communities and interrelated issues. She is a active civic engaged citizen who partakes in many roles with organizations that foster her core beliefs and contributes to community engagement project with numerous organizations . She is also a Board of Trustee to Roseville Community Charter School. In addition she is a -Center for American Women in Politics- NEW-Leadership Cohort Class of 2016. Additionally, she currently serves in LAN - Latino Action Network as VP of Membership.
Ms. Andrade firmly believes that while influential factors such as environmental can impact one’s development, individuals are ultimately masters of their own destinies and she refuses to be limited to circumstances out of her control. Ms. Andrade is a strong advocate for education and believes that this is the best way to ensure success. She is personally invested in assuring that all of her students are afforded with quality education that fosters scholarly development with the 21st century skills.
Ms. Andrade is the happy and loving mother of two beautiful children Michael and Dahlya .
